Correspondences

Background

Bar D'Auteuil were this song took shape

The song originated during the Splendor Solis tour and evolved at soundcheck for their October 11, 1994 show at Quebec City's Bar D'Auteuil. It was at this performance that renowned producer Ed Stasium first encountered the band live, marking a pivotal moment in their collaboration. The venue's intimate atmosphere and the band's raw energy during soundcheck helped shape the song's final arrangement and captured Stasium's attention, leading to their future work together on subsequent recordings.

Correspondences is also inspired by the writings of Baudelaire, who asserted that there is a correspondence between everything we perceive as separate (sound, colour, smell, taste, etc.) in this life.

about Correspondences

During the recording of vocals for the track, Jeff Martin set up in a makeshift vocal booth - a white tent surrounded by acoustic baffles in the main studio space. As the emotional intensity of his performance peaked, Martin struck one of the baffles in a moment of raw passion, causing it to topple onto several valuable instruments nearby. Among the damaged pieces was his cherished Tambura. This moment was preserved and can be heard as a hidden gem at the end of the CD version The Edges Of Twilight. Correspondences was one of 4 songs that the band made available for download on their homepage in 1997. It was a 30-second live recording, which was recorded at the gig on 11/11/1996 at the Cabaret in Montreal. Listen to the original recording here, which was later official released on the 20th Anniversary album of The Edges of Twilight:

lyrics

Hope springs to life
Charmed by approaching listlessness
Hands reaching out
To grasp the open emptiness

Ah, leading me down…

And this goodbye
Faced with hope and countenance
Souls slip away
To bask in glowing radiance

Ah, leading me down…

As we run from the sun
And we harbour the lies
And we leave things undone
As we cover our eyes

Does it tear you apart my love?
Does it tear you apart my love?
‘Cause it tears me apart

Charmed by this light
This sombre guidance in her eyes
Rage would entice
And final moments would arise

Ah, leading me down…

Does it tear you apart my love
Does it tear you apart my love
‘Cause it tears me apart

You tear me apart
